Minimum Wage Rise
6 March 2008
The minimum wage for young people is to rise in October, the government has announced.
Speaking in Parliament, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the rate for 16- to 17-year-olds will rise from £3.40 to £3.53, and for 18- to 21-year-olds from £4.60 to £4.77.
The rate for over 21s will also rise, from £5.52 to £5.73.
The British Youth Council welcomed the increases, but said it would like to see a single minimum wage for everyone aged 16 and over.
Emily Beardsmore, chair of the council, said: "We believe the minimum wage makes a real difference to the lives of many young people. Now we want to see the government ensure that finally there is fair equal pay for equal work for everyone aged over 16."
